Somatic Signage is the working title for my doctoral research; this study asks if patients with the same disease, when encouraged to express their symptoms, produce sufficient signs in common to suggest that a shared verbal and visual language of disease exists. This question evolved from two previous solo-patient-led studies that contextualised the intersubjective relationship between patient and doctor – Temporary Orifices: who am we? and Imaging Illness: Imaging Immy.
A website dedicated to the project – somaticsignage.info – will be available in January 2018.
